I'm really surprised that I've never mentioned this before on the blog. Maybe it was because I always thought that it was a fluke and would go away pretty quickly. Or maybe it was because it became so normal that I forgot that it was weird.
Our sweet, smart, funny child decided at 15 months old that her name was Sarah. That's right Sarah. She called herself that for almost exactly one year. She finally stopped on Christmas morning, a day short of 27 months.
At first we thought she was talking about one of her friends at school or church. Wrong. I checked and there were no Sarah's to be found. Then we thought that it was because she couldn't say 'Sophia'. Wrong again. She could definitely say all the sounds that were in her name. Plus, if that were the case, why wouldn't she just say 'Phia' like all her other friends? Anyway, the first couple weeks we just kept thinking it was a total fluke and would go away if we (and everyone else in the world) kept calling her Sophia. Ha! So completely wrong.
It was so normal that we wouldn't even notice when she was talking about herself. In the beginning she was saying things like, "That's Sarah's toy", "Sarah is hungry", "Sarah out!" like in this video. As her speech progressed she would say, "Hi, I'm Sarah" and "My name is Sarah", when meeting new friends. She was definitely 100% Sarah.
The funniest times were when we would pick her up from school, childcare at yoga or the church nursery and her friends (and sometimes teachers) would say, "Bye Sarah!". Hilarious. Another funny thing was that when she first learned to spell her name (22 1/2 months) she would say, "S-O-P-H-I-A... Sarah!" I'll post that video soon.
It was almost bittersweet when she quit calling herself Sarah. It had become such a term of endearment around our house. In typical Sophia fashion, she quit saying 'Sarah' cold turkey on Christmas day and we've never heard from her again. Lol :-) I found this old video (she was 18 months) and thought I would post about our sweet Sarah, I mean Sophia.
*Another funny thing I had forgotten about until I watched this video is that at around 18 months she started saying she was '2' years old. We decided not to correct her since she was over half way there :-)
